{"id":1201,"date":"2013-08-06T00:24:00","date_gmt":"2013-08-05T22:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/?p=1201"},"modified":"2013-10-21T10:11:47","modified_gmt":"2013-10-21T08:11:47","slug":"patisserie-riederer-a-point-of-reference-in-aix-en-provence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/pastry-shops\/patisserie-riederer-a-point-of-reference-in-aix-en-provence","title":{"rendered":"P\u00e2tisserie Riederer: a point of reference in Aix-en-Provence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some time ago I went on a trip to <strong>Aix-en-Provence<\/strong>, about one hour and a half away from where I live (Cannes).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Aix-en-Provence01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1634\" alt=\"Fountain in Aix en Provence\" src=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Aix-en-Provence01.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Aix-en-Provence01.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Aix-en-Provence01-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Aix is <strong>very close to Marseille<\/strong>, both geographically and culturally, but the two cities have a <strong>totally different atmosphere<\/strong>: Marseille is a big metropolis (it is the second city of France), a bit chaotic and quite, let&#8217;s say, easy-going; on the other side, <strong>Aix-en-Provence is a small, vibrant city<\/strong> of 130.000 people, of which 40.000 are University students, and its environment is much more <strong>refined<\/strong> (sometimes &#8220;snob&#8221; compared to Marseille, some people say).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2788.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1633\" alt=\"Cezanne sign on road in Aix en Provence\" src=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2788.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2788.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_2788-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The city of Aix-en-Provence is inextricably tied in with the name of the artist <strong>Paul C\u00e9zanne<\/strong>, but it is also known for its <strong>numerous fountains<\/strong> and thermal sources: &#8220;Aix&#8221; actually comes from the Latin &#8220;Aquae&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Aix-en-Provence00.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1635\" alt=\"Aix-en-Provence00\" src=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Aix-en-Provence00.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Aix-en-Provence00.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Aix-en-Provence00-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While strolling on the main boulevards and the small, pleasant streets of the city centre, it is impossible not to notice the<strong> specialty of Aix<\/strong>, which is sold almost everywhere: the <strong>Calissons d&#8217;Aix<\/strong>, <em>small almond-shaped candies<\/em> made with almond paste, fruit flavours and a white icing on top.<\/p>\n<p>Could I go to Aix and not eat these famous calissons? Of course not! And that&#8217;s why I started <strong>hunting for the best p\u00e2tisserie<\/strong> in town.<\/p>\n<p>I came across <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.riederer.fr\/patisserie-confiserie-aix-en-provence\/presentation.html\" target=\"_blank\">P\u00e2tisserie Riederer<\/a><\/strong>, which seemed to be well-known and reputed in Aix.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence00.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1636\" alt=\"Patisserie Riederer - Aix-en-Provence00\" src=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence00.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence00.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence00-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was actually quite impressed: the shop showcased a <strong>wide range of big entremets<\/strong>, which were very colourful, modern and nicely decorated.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Cakes-Aix-en-Provence04.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1637\" alt=\"Patisserie Riederer - Cakes - Aix-en-Provence04\" src=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Cakes-Aix-en-Provence04.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Cakes-Aix-en-Provence04.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Cakes-Aix-en-Provence04-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also the &#8220;mini&#8221; versions looked really good and although I was eager to try all of them, I didn&#8217;t buy anything since I was 1 hour and a half away from Cannes and <strong>couldn&#8217;t possibly hope for a creamy cake to hold until my arrival home<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Cakes-Aix-en-Provence05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1638\" alt=\"Patisserie Riederer - Cakes - Aix-en-Provence05\" src=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Cakes-Aix-en-Provence05.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Cakes-Aix-en-Provence05.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Cakes-Aix-en-Provence05-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For this reason, <strong>I opted for some calissons<\/strong> (a must)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Calissons-Aix-en-Provence09.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1639\" alt=\"Patisserie Riederer - Calissons - Aix-en-Provence09\" src=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Calissons-Aix-en-Provence09.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Calissons-Aix-en-Provence09.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Calissons-Aix-en-Provence09-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a>and then I <strong>threw myself onto the counter of chocolates<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p>So many different types of small squares filled with <strong>original fillings<\/strong>!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1640\" alt=\"Patisserie Riederer - Aix-en-Provence05\" src=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence05.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence05.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence05-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Salted caramel, raspberry, passion fruit, olive oil<\/em>, and even some filling that I still have no clue what it was!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence06.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1641\" alt=\"Patisserie Riederer - Aix-en-Provence06\" src=\"http:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence06.jpg\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence06.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.roadtopastry.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patisserie-Riederer-Aix-en-Provence06-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My favourite chocolates were those with an unusual combination of flavours: chocolate ganache with <strong>coriander and lemon<\/strong>;
